Val Gardena has a long tradition of woodcarving dating back to the middle of the 17th century. Arts and crafts have always played an important  part in the life of the Demetz family too. Oswald Demetz’s father was a turner and his mother was a carver. So Oswald became familiar with the skills of woodworking from an early age. In 1954 Oswald Demetz first learned the art of woodturning, and four years later he started an apprenticeship in woodcarving
